The last week and half have been a whirlwind. Last Thursday I went on an overnight fishing trip down to Seadrift, TX to entertain customers and prospects. Great weather and company, and plenty of red fish!
Then, early Saturday morning, Jason and I flew to NYC. I had an awards trip for work scheduled for Monday through Wednesday, so we decided to tack on the weekend to our trip since Jason had never been to NYC. (I know... back-to-back work trips? Totally not the norm, but fun nonetheless.)
Day 1
We booked an Airbnb for the first two nights down in the East Village (efficiency, 400ish sq feet, with monthly rent that was probably twice what we pay for our mortgage/ insurance/ taxes.) We loved the area! Plenty of cool restaurants and shops and even a ton of playgrounds and neat little community gardens.
We started our afternoon by stopping by ABC Beer Co. and Good Beer in the East Village for Jason to do a couple of beer trades. We grabbed lunch at ABC Beer Co.
Then we walked our way to Washington Square Park, up through the Chelsea Market, and down the Highline Park.
We found a great little Italian place in the Meatpacking District called Pepe Gallo for dinner. Then we headed to our main event for the evening - an interactive play called Sleep No More at the McKittrick Hotel. I won't say too much about the play, but it was definitely an experience to say the least. It had us talking for days!
Day 2
The next morning, we headed to Brooklyn for the day. We had brunch at a place called Dizzy's and then spent most of the morning walking through Prosperity Park. We unknowingly ran into the Bernie Sanders rally.
Then we stopped at another beer place, the Other Half brewery, so Jason could do another beer trade. We then walked the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan.
Once back in the city, we did one of the tours at the Tenement Museum. It was really cool. The museum bought one of the previously condemned tenement buildings down in the Lower East Side and recreated what life was like for several of the families that lived there. Definitely a worthwhile visit! That evening, we ate fancy ramen and sushi at a place in East Village called Jintan. Might have been my favorite meal of the trip.
Day 3 - Part 1
So, at this point in the trip, Jason was all, "I love NYC! I could totally live here." I reminded him that he had only really spent time in the East Village and Brooklyn, both totally artsy-fartsy areas, and that not all of NYC had that vibe.
So, I thought it was important that we do the morning commute and head down to the Financial District. So, Monday morning we grabbed a quick breakfast and coffee and hopped on the subway. We got off at the Wall Street stop and Jason's all, "Cool! Trinity Church from the National Treasure movie." (Totally not helping my cause to convince him NYC is not for us.)
Then we walked over to the Federal Hall where Jason got all pumped up by history.
Then a little less his speed, we saw the NY Stock Exchange and the Charging Bull.
On a sobering note, we stopped by the World Trade center memorial and then saw another cool little church and cemetery, St. Paul's Chapel.
Then it was time to head north to check into the Plaza for the work part of my trip. I can definitely say the Plaza is the fanciest place I have ever stayed. It was so nice!
We grabbed a quick lunch at Luke's Lobster at the Plaza Food Hall.
Day 3 - Part 2
Even though we had done a ton at this point in the day, the day wasn't half over, so we headed to a few Midtown attractions, starting with the NY Public Library. We didn't realize it didn't actually have many books to browse, but was more of a tourist attraction.
We saw Times Square from a few blocks away.
Then headed to see the Grand Central Terminal.
Finally, we quickly stopped by St. Patrick's Cathedral and did a quick jaunt by the Rockefeller Center.
That evening we were pooped, but grabbed a steak dinner at Club A Steakhouse. (Unfortunately, I think this was our only disappointing meal of the trip. Otherwise, we ate great!)
Day 4
Tuesday, we "took it easy." We took a nice 1.5 mile stroll through Central Park.
Then we spent 4 hours at the Met. (Oh and actually we had a terrible, overpriced lunch there too. So I guess we had two bad meals during the trip.)
My favorite part of the Met was the recreated historical rooms. They were so neat!
That evening we had my awards dinner and ceremony. Can't you see the excitement on my face? Ha.
Overall, it was a great trip. While we were gone, Jason's mom and grandma watched Matilda. We Facetimed her at least once a day. We kept expecting for her to act like she missed us, but she was having too great of a time with Nonna and KayKay. :)
