Mabel's Fourth Month

We've had a wonderful month with Miss Mabel.  I went back to work two weeks ago.  So far, the transition has probably gone as well as you could wish for.  Jason's watching the girls during the day; Matilda is doing swim lessons twice a week this month and will start school again for three days a week in September.  As long as the girls eat and sleep okay, life is peachy.  If either of those get off, then life is much harder.  We've had a mix of both of those types of days, but luckily more of the former than the latter.

Stats: Mabel is growing like a weed.  She weighs 13 pounds 11 ounces (36%), is 25.2 inches long (78%), and has a head circumference of 15.75 inches (29%).

She is growing out of her six month clothes; I'm guessing we'll be pulling out the 9 month clothes in the next couple of weeks.

Sleep: She usually still wakes once or twice a night to eat, although she has slept through the night a few times (and woken up much more frequently a few other nights).  We just moved her crib into her own room this week.  We also started swaddling one arm out to help her learn to self soothe.  Usually she'll self soothe by sucking her bottom lip or fingers or by slamming her legs up and down.  Either way, she's loud and was keeping us up at night.

Naps are still pretty infrequent, as is her waking up time.  Sometimes she'll sleep in past 9 am, sometimes she'll take a long morning naps, and sometimes she fights naps like crazy.  She's also been pretty fussy between 4-8 pm lately.  She's obviously tired, but just has a hard time relaxing.  She still requires a bit of effort to go down, whether it's nursing her, rocking her, or pacing around the bedroom.

Eat: Still nursing.  She's been taking the bottle pretty well when I'm at work (10-12 ounces) and we just moved her to the medium flow bottle nipples.

As incredibly thankful I am that she takes a bottle, I realized I see her so much less than I saw Matilda when I went back to work after Matilda's birth since I had to feed Matilda on my lunch breaks and mid-afternoon.  Last week, I didn't really get to spend any quality time with Mabel from Tuesday night to Thursday night because she slept in both Wednesday and Thursday mornings and went to bed early Wednesday.  I was pretty sad on Thursday!  It makes weekends even that much more special now.

Play/ Milestones: I feel like this is the age when babies start learning things and hitting milestones at lightening speed.  She's no longer content to just lay and observe life; she wants to be part of it.  She likes to sit up assisted.  She loves her sister's shenanigans (as long as she's not too rough or startling). She loves being sung Wheels on the Bus and Itsy Bitsy Spider (both with motions).

She always as her hand in her mouth or a toy (or her feet) to play with.  She's pretty good at grabbing toys, switching them between hands, and chewing on them.  She likes looking at board books and turning the pages.

She's also gotten much more vocal this month.  She likes to stick out her tongue, giggle a bit, squeal, and babble.  I think she's going to be blowing raspberries in no time.  And she's still as smiley of a baby as ever.

She's not rolling yet, but I think she will be soon.  I've seen her roll on her side in her crib, and when you have her on her back, she picks up her head and tucks her chin to her chest for long periods of time.
